Famous Chiefs From the Sioux Tribe
The Sioux is a Native American tribal nation consisting of three subdivisions — the Lakota, Dakota and Nakota — whose lands once spread across north central North America, including parts of North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Nebraska, and parts of Canada. Many of the tribe’s leaders became known throughout the country during the Indian wars and battles of the late 19th century.
Aaron Huey - National Geographic Magazine: Pine Ridge
Aaron Huey captures so much of this community through his photo journalism. It was hard to pick photos from this series as well, but for different reasons than the last post. In the past couple years, Native American culture was so fetishized within the popular culture and tumblr culture and choosing photos that would just fit neatly into that context seemed wrong. Alongside the photos of native americans wearing headdresses are photos of children in dilapidated houses, filled with garbage and people overcome with consumption. There is a ted talk you can watch about him and his work here.
